▴ Viré-Clessé Quintaine 2017
Viré-Clessé Quintaine, Pierrette Marc and Sophie Guillemot-Michel 2017
Taut, intense, and tightly wound, this wine has an extraordinary core energy which never fades. Shining green-gold colour, on the palate quince, peach and hints of orange and honey beguile and delight, brilliantly balanced and beautifully refined, yet with a steady impressive power. The estate, on the limestone scree of Macon’s Quintaine hills, is biodynamically farmed by Marc and Pierrette Guillemot-Michel and their daughter Sophie. The grapes are brought in in small cases, natural yeasts are used, and fermentation is in concrete vats. The purity of the wine and its singular personality shine through. At under £30 a bottle, a steal for fine wine lovers.
