Vignolo, IGT Montecarrubo 2019

Steven Spurrier always told me that interesting people make interesting wines. This might explain why I was so fascinated with Peter Vinding-Diers’ “Vignolo”, made from Syrah on the slopes of Mount Etna. This is the heart of ancient, aristocratic Sicily, as defined in Lampedusa’s “The Leopard,” and the wine thrills with a deep core of seductive dark fruit balanced by a freshness and elegance; black olives, wild thyme and orange peel add zest and uplift to this beautifully structured wine. It has a lyrical purity and the way it dances on the palate in wave after wave, like the sea lapping the shore, delighted and intrigued me: A wine for the head and heart. I’m delighted to see that Corney & Barrow are now stocking it.
