▴ Lodge Hill Riesling, Jim Barry 2020

Lodge Hill Riesling 2020, Jim Barry, Clare Valley South Australia

Bought in 1977 by the Barry family, the Lodge Hill Vineyard is one of the highest in the Clare Valley at 480m. Its Riesling vines are planted on south-facing slopes and invariably produce wines with minerality, purity, and freshness. The 2020 is no exception and is full of dry, intense, steely grapefruit notes at this early stage with a bright charge of acidity. It can be enjoyed now in its precocious youth, but I would hang to it for at least a couple of years when it will soften and develop a more savoury, lime and toast character – if previous vintages (like the 2018) are anything to go by.
