Toscana Rosso IGT “Giodo” 2016
Carlo Ferrini is one of Italy’s most celebrated wine makers, who has consulted for several of Italy’s finest estates, including San Leonardo, Barone Ricasoli and Fonterutoli. Giodo is his personal project (the name is a combination of his parent’s names, Giovanna and Donatello). He made his first wine in 1979, when he worked at the Consorzio of Chianti Classico and spearheaded the Chianti Classico 2000 project, a scheme aimed to search for better clones of Sangiovese. In 2000, he acquired a 6-hectare estate Brunello vineyard around Montalcino. The Giodo Toscana 2016 is not one of his stellar Brunellos, but an IGT wine made from the 16-year-old vines on the estate and aged for 12 months in 500- and 2,500-litre wooden casks. The wine is deliberately made for younger drinking and the 2016 shows astounding energy and vibrancy, beautiful purity of fruit, a firm core of crushed red berries and cherries, with fine tannins. It’s youthful and joyous, but still utterly elegant. Price £39.95 Lea and Sandeman.
