Château Giscours 2015
One of the positive sides of the lockdowns this year has been the number of great tastings held online. I have been lucky enough to MC several for 67 Pall Mall, who have led the way with an unrivalled array of top masterclasses, at www.67pallmall.com/events. There have been many brilliant wines, but one that stood out is Château Giscours 2015. We Bordeaux lovers have a tendency to generalise over vintages and declare best vintages rather like school children playing Top Trumps. Certainly 2015 is a vintage in the shadow of 2016 (which is brilliant nearly everywhere) but the commune of Margaux delivered something very special in 2015, and Château Giscours demonstrates this brilliantly. An enticing bouquet soars out of the glass, the palate has a deep core of blackberries and red fruit, while swirling layers reveal cedar, lead pencil and minerals. There is an energy and purity to this wine which is outstanding – the long finish completes the classical journey. I predict it will be a legendary Giscours. Price around £65 Berry Brothers and Rudd, Farr Vintners, Vinatis, Millesima.
